Getting Height and Length Right

Two numbers do most of the work. Height should land within an inch or two of the sofa seat cushion, level or just below, so nobody reaches down for a mug. Length should run roughly two thirds of the sofa, which keeps it from looking stranded or from swallowing the seating group. Leave about a foot and a half between the table edge and the seat front: enough to walk through, close enough to set a glass down. Two smaller tables side by side answer a long sofa well.

Round tables have no corners to catch a hip, which makes them the safe choice in a tight room or a house with toddlers.
