Storage is the thing people underbuy and then regret within a year. This group of 39 cabinets from Mercana, BDI, Hooker Furniture and Lexington covers the range: curio and display cabinets, open shelving units, closed door credenzas and media consoles, in wood, metal and glass for the living room and beyond.

Open Shelving, Closed Doors or Both

Decide first what the piece is hiding and what it is showing. Glass front display cabinets are for things you want lit and looked at, and they demand editing; a half empty curio looks unfinished, while a packed one looks like a closet. Solid doors are the right answer for electronics, board games, spare linens and everything else. Two door cases with open shelving above split the difference and are the most forgiving choice if you are not sure yet. Check shelf adjustability before you buy, since a fixed shelf decides what fits for the life of the piece.

Putting a Cabinet to Work in Any Room

A credenza behind a sofa reads as a console. The same case against a dining wall serves as a bar with glassware behind the doors, which is worth comparing against dedicated home bar furniture. In an entry, it swallows shoes and mail. In a home office, it takes printer, paper and cables off the desk. Measure the wall, then measure the door swing.
