What Sits Under the Mattress, and How Much Floor It Takes

A platform bed carries the mattress directly on a slat deck, so you skip the foundation and the mattress sits lower. A traditional frame usually needs a foundation under it, which adds height. Settle that before you shop mattresses, since it changes how tall the finished bed sits and therefore which nightstands will work beside it. Measure a walkway on both sides, and remember a footboard adds length the mattress size does not account for.
