How Leather Ages, and Why That Is the Point

Fabric fades and thins where you use it. Leather does close to the opposite: it softens, gives up a little surface finish across the seat and arms, and darkens slightly where hands rest. That is patina, and it is why a well built leather chair outlives two fabric ones. Aniline and semi-aniline hides show it fastest because less pigment sits on the surface. Protected leathers hold color longer and shrug off spills, which is the trade you make in a house with a dog and a toddler.

Pairing a Leather Chair With What You Already Own

You do not need a matching leather suite. A single leather chair beside a fabric sofa does more for a room than five matching pieces, because the contrast reads as collected rather than delivered. Keep the tones a step apart instead of trying to match exactly. Add an ottoman if the chair is meant for reading, and give the pair a lamp and a surface within arm's reach.
