Three proportions do most of the work. The shade should be roughly twice as wide as the widest point of the base, it should take up about a third of the lamp's total height, and it should be narrow enough that it does not hang past the edge of the side table. Drum and straight-sided shades throw a soft, even wash across a room. Tighter, tapered shades push light up and down instead, which is what you want over a reading chair.
