Seating Is Where a Relaxed Room Succeeds or Fails

Casual rooms only work if people can actually settle into them, which is why a collection weighted toward chairs is more useful than one weighted toward case goods. Counter Stools and the Kitchen Island Problem

Counter and bar stools let the kitchen agree with the dining room, which is the seam most open plan houses get wrong. Measure the overhang first. Counter height wants roughly a 25 inch seat and bar height roughly 30, with 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside of the counter, and 26 to 30 inches of width per stool so elbows clear.
