The Stickley Story
125 Years of American Craftsmanship
Stickley began in 1900, when the Stickley brothers turned a small furniture workshop in upstate New York into one of the defining names of the American Arts & Crafts movement. Their philosophy was simple and, for the time, radical: honest materials, visible joinery, and design meant to outlast every trend. Gustav Stickley stamped his work with the motto Als ik kan — Flemish for “as best I can.”
By the 1970s the company had nearly disappeared. In 1974, Alfred and Aminy Audi bought Stickley and spent decades restoring it, reissuing the original Mission collection in 1989 and sparking a nationwide Arts & Crafts revival. Today Stickley is still family-run and still made in America — with the same commitment to the craft it started with 125 years ago.
How Stickley Is Made
Solid Wood, Built by Hand
Solid hardwood, never veneer over particleboard. Stickley builds in quartersawn white oak, cherry, and walnut, chosen for grain and strength.
Mortise-and-tenon joinery. The same time-tested joints Gustav Stickley used — pinned, glued, and built to survive generations of daily use.
Finished by hand. A multi-step, hand-applied finishing process brings out the depth of the wood and protects it for a lifetime.
Made in America. More than 90% of Stickley furniture is handcrafted by artisans in Manlius, New York and Archdale, North Carolina.
Kind Words
What Our Customers Say
We bought a Stickley dining set fifteen years ago and it still looks brand new. When it was time for a sofa, we came straight back.
The Morris recliner is the most comfortable — and best made — chair I have ever owned. Worth every penny.
Seldens helped us customize the wood and finish to match our home. This is true heirloom furniture.
